Ranbir Kapoor starrer Shamshera finally hit the theatres on Friday, i.e July 22. The first-day box office report has been disappointing as the period-action drama registered a Rs 10.25 crore collection. For the movie made on a budget of Rs 150 crore, the first-day earnings are even less than that of Akshay Kumar ’s box office bomb Bachchhan Paandey and Samrat Prithviraj .
According to trade analyst Taran Adarsh, Shamshera’s opening day collections have been the fifth-highest on the rank of Bollywood’s film of the year. While Bachchhan Paandey stood second-highest with a collection of Rs 13.25 crore. Whereas Samrat Prithviraj registered Rs 10.70 crore, and Alia Bhatt ’s Gangubai Kathiawadi raked in Rs 10.50 crore. Shamshera’s collection was even less than Ranbir’s earlier biggest first-day openers like Sanju ( Rs 34.75 cr) Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (Rs 19.45 cr), Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (Rs 3.30 cr ), and Tamasha (Rs 10.94 cr).

The hopes are high as Ranbir returned to the silver screen after four years with Shamshera. The film opened in 4000 theatres but witnessed show cancellations because of low turnout. Despite being a massy entertainer, the film had low footfalls on the first day. As per BoxofficeIndia.com, the film underperformed in mass markets as well as in Mumbai.” The film has a tough road ahead, which combined with the less-than-positive reviews should make it more difficult for it to finish with a healthy total,” it reported.
Backed by Yash Raj Films and directed by Karan Malhotra , Shamshera follows a dacoit tribe and their fight for independence against British rule. Ranbir plays the dual role of father and son, with Sanjay Dutt as an antagonist, and Vaani Kapoor as travelling performer. Considering that it is an absolute mass film, the box office numbers can escalate in a big way depending on word of mouth.
