Andhagan gets new release date
Actor-producer Prasanth on Wednesday announced a new release date for his upcoming movie Andhagan. The film will now open in cinemas on August 9, instead of August 15 as announced earlier.
Prasanth's new decision is perceived as a strategic move to avoid a direct clash with Thangalaan, one of the most awaited movies in Tamil cinema this year. Starring Tamil superstar Vikram, who is also Prasanth's cousin, Thangalaan is slated for the Independence Day holiday. Earlier, Telugu superstar Allu Arjun's highly anticipated movie Pushpa 2: The Rule was set to arrive in cinemas on that date. However, it was postponed due to production reasons, sparking a rush among other filmmakers to grab the coveted holiday.

Many films are now set to be released in cinemas on August 15, including Thangalaan, Double iSmart, Mr. Bachchan, Demonte Colony, and Raghu Thatha.

It seems the makers of Andhagan have made a clever choice by avoiding the holiday release. The conditions in the market for remake movies are not conducive at present. Many movies have failed to perform well in cinemas as the audience seems reluctant to go to theatres to watch a remake. This trend is one of the major changes brought about by the advent of streaming services in India.
Releasing Andhagan amid such strong competition would have added to its challenges. At least now, the film has a fighting chance, with only Dhanush's latest blockbuster Raayan posing a serious challenge. If the film manages to click with a mass audience, it will at least have a week's breathing space to gain traction.
Andhagan is the remake of the 2018 Bollywood hit Andhadhun. The Tamil remake is helmed by Thiagarajan and also stars Simran, Priya Anand, Karthik, and Samuthirakani, among others.
