MT Vasudevan Nair passes away: Kamal Haasan, Mohanlal, Mammootty pay rich tribute

The literary and cinematic world mourns the loss of MT Vasudevan Nair, an iconic figure in Malayalam literature and cinema, who passed away at the age of 91 in Kozhikode. Fondly known as MT, he was celebrated for his profound storytelling that vividly captured the essence of Kerala's culture and human emotions.

Malayalam superstar Mohanlal reflected on his association with Nair, stating, "I shared a long-standing relationship with him (MT). He gave me some of the most significant characters in my acting career. I also had the opportunity to work with him on two films under his direction. He was one of the popular novelists and screenwriters, not just in Kerala but across India."

Actor Mammootty expressed his deep personal connection and sense of loss, saying, "Some people say that MT discovered Mammootty. I was the one who wanted to see him, prayed for him, and found him. That relationship grew from the day I met him. We were like brothers. Four or five months ago, during a program in Ernakulam, I met him and he leaned on my chest. I felt like I was that man's son. I have found a place in that heart. This is the greatest fortune I have received in my film career. I have portrayed many characters with a touch of his soul. I don't remember any of them now. An era is fading away. My mind feels empty. I spread both my hands."

Kamal Haasan also paid his respects, acknowledging MT's immense contributions to the arts: "We have lost a great writer. The greatest personality of the Malayalam literary world, M.T. Vasudevan Nair, has left us. My friendship with him was fifty years old. He was the creator of 'Kanyakumari,' which introduced me to the Malayalam film world. Our friendship continued till the recent release of 'Manorathangal.' He has contributed great novels to the Malayalam literary world and became a successful screenwriter. His demise has caused me great pain. He contributed to all forms of writing with his own uniqueness and has retired. This is a huge loss. It will deeply distress South Indian literary readers. My heartfelt tribute to a great writer."

MT Vasudevan Nair's body of work, comprising nine novels, 19 short story collections, and numerous screenplays, has left an indelible mark on both literature and cinema. His storytelling earned him prestigious accolades, including the Padma Bhushan and the Jnanpith Award. His narratives not only shaped generations but also bridged the gap between literary arts and cinematic storytelling, solidifying his status as a cultural icon whose legacy will endure.
