Mission Raniganj vs Thank You For Coming Box Office Day 1: Both open to a poor start but Akshay Kumar fares better

This weekend saw the release of two anticipated movies namely Mission Raniganj and Thank You For Coming. While one starring Akshay Kumar is based on a real-life incident, the other with Bhumi Pednekar in the titular role is a coming-of-age flick. Alas, both movies fared extremely poorly on their opening day.

Talking about Thank You For Coming, the Bhumi Pednekar starrer has opened to just Rs 80 lakh. The inability of the movie to mint even above Rs 1 crore is very alarming and it will have to redeem itself a great deal. The film has been directed by Karan Boolani and also stars Shehnaaz Gill, Dolly Singh, Shibani Bedi, and Kusha Kapila. It revolves around a woman who is in despair for not experiencing an orgasm during her sexual escapades. It also has a cameo by Anil Kapoor.

Mission Raniganj is based on a true-life incident on the Raniganj coalfields explosion which took place in West Bengal’s Raniganj in 1989. One brave mining engineer, Jaswant Singh Gill took up the responsibility of saving 71 trapped miners. According to Sacnilk, the movie has minted Rs 2.80 crore on its opening day. The advanced box office collections had reportedly made trade analysts predict that the film will indeed fare poorly. However, it is yet to be seen whether some positive word-of-mouth can improve the collections. The film is directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and also stars Parineeti Chopra, Jameel Khan, Ravi Kishan, Kumud Mishra, and Dibyendu Bhattacharya in pivotal roles.

Desimartini’s review for Thank You For Coming read, “Thank You For Coming is everything that feminism and sexual liberation are not. The female protagonist attaches her life's goal of achieving an orgasm and what follows is a laborious string of male bashing, patronizing the idea of a fairytale romance and getting a completely wrong notion of an 'independent and empowered woman.' While the review for Akshay Kumar’s Mission Raniganj read, “The biggest con of Mission Raniganj is it's half-baked and lousy screenplay. The plot which had the potential to be crisp turns out to be laboriously paced with some sub-plots which only added to the length of the movie.”
