Suriya in Suriya 44
Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj has set the record straight regarding his much-anticipated collaboration with Tamil superstar Suriya. The upcoming film, tentatively titled Suriya 44, had sparked widespread speculation about the nature of Suriya’s role, with fans concluding that he would play an anti-hero, likely in a gangster avatar. However, Subbaraj has now dismissed these rumours, revealing that the film is a love story with action, not a gangster drama.
In a recent interview with SS Music, Karthik Subbaraj, said, "If I do a movie, they decide it's a gangster movie. Actually, Suriya 44 is not a gangster movie. It's a love story with a lot of action. The core of the film is a love story."

"It was my long-time wish to make a proper love story. And when I got a chance to make one with Suriya and Pooja Hegde, I became so excited. It definitely involves a lot of action, but it's not a story about a gangster."
The confusion arose from the film’s teasers, which offered few clues about Suriya's character, leaving fans guessing about whether he would play a hero or a villain. However, Subbaraj’s clarification puts an end to those theories.
Karthik Subbaraj also reflected on his experience working with Suriya for the first time, expressing admiration for the actor’s professionalism and dedication. "Before making this movie, I only knew Suriya sir as this great actor. I had pitched scripts to him before as well. The way he listened to the narration, I could sense he was very professional and creative. On sets, he was very dedicated, as everyone knows. It was so rewarding to see him bring to life the character that I wrote."
Karthik revealed that the filming of Suriya 44 has wrapped up and is currently in post-production. He described the shoot as a challenging one but expressed satisfaction with the final outcome. "It was a tough shoot, but we’ve completed it," he said. The film is slated for release next year.
