Karan Johar to remake Aavesham in Hindi?
Ever since the 2024 Malayalam film Aavesham hit the big screens, the Fahadh Faasil-starrer has garnered huge acclaim and traction among audiences across several languages. While there have been ongoing speculations about the film's remake rights being sold to other languages, the latest update has sent the internet into a frenzy.
Karan Johar to remake Aavesham?
According to recent buzz, the Hindi remake rights of the Malayalam film, directed by Jithu Madhavan, have been sold to none other than Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar. Although there isn't any confirmation yet, the internet is abuzz with speculations. While some fans are excited about the rumor, many others are apprehensive about a potential remake. A few users have even urged South Indian filmmakers to stop selling remake rights to Bollywood, or as some netizens have dubbed it, ‘Remakewood.’

For the unversed, the 2024 action comedy revolves around three college students who befriend an eccentric local gangster, Ranga (played by Fahadh Faasil) in Bengaluru. The film, which was released during the Vishu festival in 2024, received overwhelming responses from audiences and critics, alike, and went onto become one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of the year.
Karan Johar’s interest in south Indian films
This isn't the first time Hindi cinema mogul Karan Johar has shown interest in remaking South Indian films. Earlier, the director-producer had acquired the remake rights of the 2022 Malayalam blockbuster romantic drama Hridayam, which featured Pranav Mohanlal and Kalyani Priyadarshan in the lead roles. Johar also faced criticism for remaking the cult classic Tamil film Pariyerum Perumal into his upcoming sequel Dhadak 2. Although the film is yet to hit the big screens, many believe it won't live up to the expectations set by the original Tamil version.

Other remake speculations for Aavesham
Earlier, the internet was abuzz with speculation that Telugu superstar Nandamuri Balakrishna was in talks to play the role of ‘Ranga’ from Aavesham in its Telugu remake. However, it was later reported that Balakrishna had turned down the opportunity. According to reports, Balakrishna opted out of the Aavesham remake because he prefers not to play dark or negative characters. Sources revealed that Balakrishna believes 'a hero should portray positive and inspiring roles' rather than those with a dark persona.
Nonetheless, fans have expressed mixed views on the remake of the action-comedy Aavesham and many would prefer the filmmakers to retain the original. Do fans want Fahadh to be the one and only Ranga? Or will another actor take up the mantle? We'll have to wait and see how it turns out!
