Kangana Ranaut has sought a permanent exemption from appearing in court for all her hearings in lyricist Javed Akhtar’s defamation case. However, the actress’ exemption was rejected by Metropolitan magistrate RR Khan. The court furthermore accused Kangana of dictating her own terms when it comes to her court proceedings.
The court furthermore stated that Kangana Ranaut might be a busy celebrity but she is still accused of the cases against her. A news report in PTI stated, “Per contra, the accused is dictating her own terms for the trial of this case in the manner she likes. Admittedly, the accused cannot claim permanent exemption as of right. The accused has to follow the established procedure of law and terms and conditions of her bail bonds.”.
Metropolitan magistrate RR Khan has also stated that to date, Kangana Ranaut has not appeared with an intent to cooperate with the court in the charges levied against her. The Tanu Weds Manu Returns actress sought an exemption from her court appearances citing that she is one of the top actresses in the Hindi film industry which requires her to travel to different national and international locations for her professional commitments. However, the court denied agreeing with this request of the actress.
The court further said in their order, “For the fair progress of the trial, her cooperation is essential in the matter. It is pertinent to mention here that the accused has built up her mind that her presence, in this case, is not necessary and her advocate will look after the legal formalities.” The court added that exempting the Manikarnika : The Queen Of Jhansi actress would be unfair to Javed Akhtar who is a senior citizen.
It all started after Javed Akhtar had filed a case against Kangana back in November 2020. The lyricist had accused the actress of telling some defamatory statements against him. This was in reference of her interview with a news channel regarding Sushant Singh Rajput ’s demise.
