Kamal Haasan in Thug Life
Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan is turning 70 on Thursday, and fans will get a glimpse of his latest film Thug Life, with a special teaser release timed to celebrate the occasion. Raajkamal Films International, the production house backing the film, tweeted Tuesday, inviting fans to “watch out for the Thug” on Kamal’s birthday.
The production company also released a character sketch that reveals Kamal’s unique look, complete with long hair and a beard, reminiscent of a samurai warrior. This imagery aligns with the style seen in the film’s title reveal teaser, where Kamal’s character introduced himself as a “yakuza”—a nod to the Japanese term for “thug.” In the teaser, Kamal’s character implies that he was moulded by society’s perception of him, ultimately becoming a “legendary thug.”

Kamal’s character in Thug Life is named Rangaraya Sakthivel Nayakar—a name that hints at echoes of iconic roles he’s portrayed over his illustrious career. Judging by initial teasers, Mani Ratnam appears to be reimagining his style, with Thug Life featuring highly stylized action and futuristic visuals, contrasting with the grounded realism characteristic of his past films.
Set in a dystopian future, Thug Life is likely to diverge from Mani Ratnam’s established filmography of over four decades. The action scenes teased so far appear more elaborate and stylized, offering a fresh take on Mani Ratnam’s signature storytelling. Fans eagerly await the new teaser to uncover more about Thug Life’s setting and storyline.
The production of Thug Life wrapped at a rapid pace, and the movie is now deep in post-production. The film boasts a star-studded cast, including Silambarasan, Trisha, Ashok Selvan, and Ali Fazal, and is expected to hit theatres next summer.
