The business of cinema and box office is all about momentum. When the wind is blowing in one’s favour, even insurmountable obstacles can transform into opportunities. Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan is currently riding a wave of success after enduring a major setback with his recent film Indian 2.
Following the disappointment of Indian 2, Kamal scored a huge win with his production venture Amaran, starring Sivakarthikeyan. The biopic drama, written and directed by Rajkumar Periasamy, initially sought Kamal’s support only as a “presenter,” meaning he would lend his name to the project without a financial stake. However, as the budget began to exceed Sony Pictures' original plan, Kamal stepped in as a co-producer through his company, Raajkamal Films International.

Industry sources suggest that Kamal also provided Rajkumar with creative feedback, which the director reportedly embraced. Amaran opened to packed theatres, instantly becoming a box office hit and earning glowing reviews from critics.
Meanwhile, the teaser for Kamal’s upcoming film Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, has fans and industry insiders buzzing. In this action-packed drama, Kamal stars alongside Silambarasan and Trisha. With the film already looking like a potential blockbuster, the momentum around Kamal’s career only continues to build.
Kamal’s recent successes have revived hopes for Indian 3, the next instalment in the Indian Thatha series. Initially planned to release within six months of Indian 2, the project was shelved after Indian 2 underperformed at the box office and received lukewarm reviews. Neither Lyca Productions nor director Shankar has addressed the fate of Indian 3, leading to speculation about whether it might see a direct-to-streaming release.
In light of Amaran’s success and the anticipation surrounding Thug Life, reports suggest that Lyca Productions is considering funding Indian 3 for a theatrical release. The studio appears to have renewed confidence in Kamal’s vision for the story and its potential resonance with audiences.
Even during Indian 2 promotions, Kamal hinted at his enthusiasm for the third part, noting, “I said yes to part 2 because I loved the story of part 3.” If director Shankar can also rebound from Indian 2’s setback with his upcoming film Game Changer starring Ram Charan, the path to completing Indian 3 might clear even further.
