Deepika Padukone in Kalki 2898 AD
Following the blockbuster success of the Prabhas and Deepika Padukone-led film Kalki 2898 AD, anticipation for its sequel is running high. While fans eagerly awaited updates from the makers, producers Swapna Dutt and Priyanka Dutt recently shared intriguing insights about the film’s progress.
At the recent 50th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) event in Goa, the Vyjayanthi Films producers, who are backing the film series, revealed that Deepika Padukone's character, Sumathi, will return in the sequel. They also confirmed that Deepika will resume shooting for the project after her maternity break. Earlier this year, the actor welcomed her daughter, Dua Padukone Singh. Interestingly, she had previously disclosed that she was pregnant while filming the first installment of Kalki, where she portrayed an expecting mother.
The producers remarked, “She will still play the mother in certain parts of the film.” They further revealed that Kalki 2 is currently in the pre-production phase, with around 30-35% of the movie already completed during the production of the first installment.
Addressing rumors about the sequel’s shoot schedule, the producers clarified that they have yet to finalize the dates for resuming filming, quashing speculation about a confirmed start date.

Following the release of Kalki 2898 AD, the makers announced that a sequel is in development and is expected to hit screens in 2027 or 2028. For context, Kalki 2898 AD is the first installment in the Kalki Cinematic Universe, envisioned as a trilogy.
Directed by National Award-winning filmmaker Nag Ashwin, the film stars Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, and Amitabh Bachchan. Set in a dystopian future, the story follows Kalki, the modern avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, as he descends to Earth to battle evil forces.
In addition to the lead trio, the film features a stellar supporting cast, including Disha Patani, Anna Ben, Pasupathy, Shobana, Saswata Chatterjee, and Brahmanandam. It also boasts cameo appearances by Dulquer Salmaan, Mrunal Thakur, Vijay Deverakonda, Ram Gopal Varma, S.S. Rajamouli, and Malavika Nair.
