S Shankar, who has had a disastrous outing this year with the failure of his much-hyped film Indian 2 earlier this year, has pinned all hopes on bouncing back with the Ram Charan-starrer Game Changer. The director recently opened up about the failure of the Kamal Haasan-starrer Indian 2.
Shankar defends Indian 2
Speaking in an interview, the director shared that he did not anticipate the backlash post the release of the film. Breaking his silence, he expressed that he had clear intentions of conveying a good story. "I tried to convey a good thought. That way, I am happy. 'If the house is clean, then the nation will be clean' is a wonderful and necessary thought. Although there is a question of how it can be practically implemented, it is still important," he said.
While justifying his film, Shankar shared two instances that he believed illustrated the impact of Indian 2. He mentioned a case in Telangana where a woman engineer caught accepting bribes was referred to as an example of the "Indian 2 effect," expressing satisfaction that what they envisioned was becoming a reality. He also recounted a story of an auto driver who stole a gold chain from a passenger, only for his son to turn him in to the police. He said, "When I see these kinds of stories, I am happy. I didn’t expect so much negative reviews for Indian 2, but that’s okay. I’m now focused on delivering better work with Game Changer and Indian 3."
Indian 3 to have theatrical release
Following the negative reception Indian 2 received post its theatrical release, there were several speculations suggesting that the third installment of the film, Indian 3, may opt for a direct OTT release. However, director Shankar refuted the claims and has confirmed that the movie will release in theatres.
Shankar’s next film Game Changer
On the other hand, S Shankar is gearing up for the grand release of his upcoming Telugu film Game Changer, which stars Ram Charan in the lead. The movie is set to make its theatrical debut on January 10, 2025, during this Sankranti festive season.
