When a film releases, it either does exceptionally well or tanks at the box office without leaving much of an impact on the audience. Then there are masterpieces which are way ahead of their time and leave a lasting impression on viewers. This is the category that Abhay Deol’s film Dev.D falls under. Helmed by ace filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, the dark romantic drama walked us through the point of views of three characters– Paro, played by Mahie Gill, Chanda portrayed by Kalki Koechlin and Dev aka Abhay. Today, the iconic film completes 15 successful years.
Celebrating the milestone, Abhay took to his official social media handle to share, “It’s 15 years today since the release of Dev.D. I still remember pitching the idea of a contemporary, musical version of Devdas to Anurag, at the juhu Marriott. The shock and excitement on his face is etched in my memory. My ending was different from what he made though, I had Dev get shot by the cops outside Paro’s house because by the end of the film he’s a drug dealer. But the happy ending gave my character redemption, and it clearly worked. I still wonder where we would be had we killed him off. Dev the drug dealer, the original chauvinist, he was always far beyond redemption for me from the start lol!”

Now that’s an alternate ending we weren’t expecting for Dev. Abhay went on to reveal that he hasn’t pitched an idea to another filmmaker ever since Dev.D and wondered if he should shift his focus to developing content again. Well, that’s what fans want and they have made it pretty clear in the comment section below. For instance, one netizen wrote: “This movie was way ahead of it’s time. We need Hindi movies like this now!!!!!”, whereas another social media user shared, “My favourite @abhaydeol film, you always did different kind if cinema , wanna see you back again ❤️.”
