Aya is all set to arrive on streaming soon. Netflix has confirmed the movie's digital premiere date, and it will be available on the platform starting September 12, just a little more than a month after its theatrical release.
Aya's streaming release follows the growing trend in the South Indian movie industry. Most South Indian films make their digital debuts less than a month after their theatrical run. Although this trend has faced strong objections from some stakeholders in the box office business, it persists, as producers are able to turn a profit by sticking to a shorter theatrical window.
Producers appear to offset potential box office losses by securing early OTT releases with major streaming platforms. Surprisingly, despite Aya being presented by Allu Aravind, who owns the homegrown streaming platform Aha, the film has found a streaming home on Netflix.
Aya is written and directed by Anji K. Maniputhra and produced by Bunny Vas. The story revolves around three best friends set against a rural backdrop.
Judging by the trailer, the three friends have gained a notorious reputation in the village for being useless, reckless, and troublemakers. They treat life like a game, without worrying about the consequences. However, their lives take a drastic turn when one of the friends falls in love with a "town" girl. The girl, however, brings her own eccentricities, adding to the film's humour. The movie seems to offer a light-hearted take on existing caste divisions in society and how they hinder individual desires and ambitions.
Aya stars Narne Nithin, Nayan Sarika, Rajkumar Kasireddy, and Ankith Koyya, among others.
At a time when big-budget, star-vehicles finding it difficult to draw audiences to theatres, a few small-budget Telugu movies managed to give much-needed relief to theatres in the Telugu states, including Aay.
