Thor: Love and Thunder is the fourth installment in the Thor franchise and the first in the MCU to get a fourth movie, set in the fourth phase of the MCU and after the events of Avengers: Endgame .
The movie will follow Thor as he tries to better understand himself and deal with the loss of his family. However, when he encounters Jane Foster wielding his hammer Mjolnir as well as a new and powerful enemy called Gorr: the god killer, Thor must rally his friends in order to stop the new threat.
So let's take a look at five easter eggs and references from the footage -
Thor's iconic helmet has been missing from the franchise. While we had some versions of it, all of them felt toned down from the comics. Well, it seems Taika Waititi has included a new and more elaborate one for the movie that feels more rooted in the comics.
We got our first look at Christain Bale as Gorr the God Butcher and his powerful sword called the All Dark. The sword is also called the Necrosword, the sword gives him the power to slay gods with ease.
Gorr obtained the sword from a primordial entity called Knull. It's not clear if we will get to see Knull in the movie but he does play a large role in the Marvel universe.
Knull is also the creator of the alien races known as the Symbiotes which Venom and Carnage belong to.
We see Valkyrie using Zeus ThunderBolts in Battle against Gorr in what looks like an epic clash. Since the movie will see the introduction of Mount Olympus and the Greek gods make their MCU debut, it is clear where she acquire such a powerful weapon but what is curious is how she obtained them.
Zeus isn't known for sharing his ThunderBolts which are one of the most powerful weapons ever forged and can kill most opponents with a single strike but Gorr seems to be a match for them.
We see Thor and his friends in Mount Olympus home of the Greek gods. In the teaser we saw Zeus played by Russell Crowe and it was speculated that Thor arrived to ask for help against Gorr but now in the trailer we see Thor take on the Olympians. Now, this could be just a misunderstanding but it is also a clear throw to the comics.
In the comics, Thor has battled the Olympian gods including Hercules and Zeus but needed the help of Odinforce - a power wielded by the kings of Asgard.
Towards the end of the trailer, we see Jane Foster in a hall of statues which includes references to some iconic Marvel characters like Uatu the Watcher who fans will be familiar with after his appearance in the MCU series What If?
We also see states of the Mistress Death who in the comics is responsible for the Infinity Gauntlet and Thanos's obsession with finding it, and finally, we see a statue to The Living Tribunal a powerful entity which oversees and maintains balance in the realities.
Thor: Love and Thunder hits the big screen on July 8, 2022. You can check out the trailer below -
