The actor has worked in the Bollywood industry for 21 years and has featured in films like Kaminey, Padmaavat, and the widely criticized film Kabir Singh, among others. The actor added that the audience has to decide what they like and what they don’t like.
Shahid Kapoor talks about Kabir Singh
During an interview with Faye D’Souza, referencing Kabir Singh, the interviewer asked Shahid if he thinks cinema has the power to lead society down a particular path. In response, Shahid said that if a person watched Kabir Singh and thought that they would never want to meet a man like him, he would be fine with that. Shahid stated that his job is to do his best to help people understand who the character is and why is he behaving like he is. He said that it is not his job to judge the character.
“I am putting myself on a pedestal by judging what you should and should not watch. Who am I to decide that? Who am I to decide that you will get influenced positively or negatively by the character? I cannot do that because then I am putting myself above you,” he added.
Shahid retorted that his role as an artist is to represent life and what the audience takes from it is up to them and they cannot blame it on the artist. “My role is to reflect life and things happen, good characters, bad characters, grey characters. If I was standing here defending my character saying that he is the nicest guy. There are so many artists who play these perfect characters, but they do the exact opposite in their real lives and that is a choice I want to be responsible for,” Shahid stated.
The actor added that there are certificates and age brackets for certain kinds of films that are made for particular age groups. He said that if the film is made for adults, then they should treat adults as adults, and he is no one to judge what adults should and should not watch.
In conclusion, Shahid added that people like Kabir Singh exist, and girls fall in love with them so why can’t they make films about them? “You walk away, you decide what you like what you don’t like,” he said.
On the work front, Shahid was last seen alongside Kriti Sanon in a romantic comedy film titled Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya. He will be next seen in Deva with Pooja Hegde.
