Shah Rukh Khan reveals Aditya Chopra and Yash Chopra's biggest fights on sets; Karan Johar remembers their tussle on Kajol's silk saree in DDLJ

From lukewarm response to Diwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’s script to convincing Shah Rukh Khan to play Raj, Aditya Chopra had fair share of struggles during his directorial debut. His father Yash Chopra , the father of romance in Indian cinema, was quite skeptical about his potential in initial days. In the Netflix’s docu-series The Romantics , Shah Rukh revealed that though they respected each other’s creative genius, there was a father-son issue. Filmmaker Karan Johar, who shares close bond with both of them, remembered how the two were at loggerheads about actress Kajol’s saree in DDLJ.

“As directors on sets, they are very different, Yash ji would not take any retakes. And it's Yashji and Adi’s biggest fights on set. So he(Yash)would ask him why are you taking the retake, he(Aditya) would say I am doing safety. And he(Yash) says, ‘Are you a fireman’ that you should have safety,” said the Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge actor. Further, he added that their style of shooting is very different as Aditya is a more verbose director. Also, Abhishek Bachchan, who is childhood friend of Aditya, said that while Yash uncle would greet everyone on sets, his son is neurotic, while Kajol added he was very grumpy on sets.

On the other hand, Karan admitted that he too was witness to Yash's struggle with Aditya. Recalling an anecdote from DDLJ’s shooting days, he said that Aditya had decided that he must break his father’s stereo, and give Kajol a silk saree, not chiffon. “I kept watching a very distressed Yash Chopra, who was like his fabric will not fly and if it doesn’t fly, it will not look beautiful. And I was like Yash uncle. I am trying very hard but he is not listening to me,” said the filmmaker, who worked as assistant director and acted in a few scenes in DDLJ.

Meanwhile, Aditya Chopra shot for his first interview after 28 years for The Romantics which is a tribute to his father’s legacy in Indian cinema. In the docu-series, he opened up about his childhood days, his learnings of filmmaking, his failures and successes. He also addressed nepotism debate, and admitted that star kids or people having connections with film industry do get easy access but ultimately its audience verdict which makes them a star. Citing an example of his own brother Uday Chopra, he said that, “we couldn’t make him a star.”
