Today is the birthday of the legendary Shabana Azmi, who, in her own way, has not just redefined perfection when it comes to acting, but also has always been an epitome of someone who balances personal and professional life seamlessly. Having been born to illustrious parents in the form of Shaukat and Kaifi Azmi, the birthday girl Shabana Azmi has always strived to achieve excellence in Bollywood and has even succeeded to a large extent.
Be it her debut film or the more recent Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt starrer Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Shabana Azmi always has been setting the silver screen on fire with her performances. IN a recent interview with Indian Express, the veteran actress spoke about ‘not being disheartened about being unable to have children is uplifting for women’.
When asked about the same, Shabana Azmi said that it was tough coming to terms with the fact that one can’t bear children and that the society makes the individual feel incomplete. She added that one has to work hard to pull oneself out of that, but, one’s ultimate sense of self must come from your work.
In the same breath, she said that ‘women often measure the self-worth from their relationships – how they hold up as a wife, mother daughter… For a man that’s not the criterion of success – rather it’s his career, his work that gives him the greatest satisfaction. I believe that should apply to all genders’.
She also added that, when she asked her mother (late actor Shaukat Azmi), about what was the most fulfilling of all her roles, her answer left her (Shabana Azmi) surprised. The veteran actress revealed that her mother said that it was her work and appreciation for it which gave her primary satisfaction and that women have to overcome patriarchal expectations.
She also added that, her mother also mentioned that, it did not mean turning up one’s nose to duty but making it more inclusive so that the person’s partner also respects it.
