Indian tennis legend Sania Mirza got her personal life into the spotlight after her husband Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik announced his third marriage. Sania’s sister Anam Mirza revealed that the sports power couple has been divorced for several months now. On behalf of Sania and The Mirza Family, Anam shared a note requesting fans to respect her sister’s need for privacy.
Taking to Instagram, Anam posted a joint statement that read, “Sania has always kept her personal life away from the public eyes. However, today the need has arisen for her to share that Shoaib and she have been divorced for a few months now. She wishes Shoaib well for his new journey ahead! At this sensitive period of her life, we would like to refrain from indulging in any speculation and to respect her need for privacy.” Earlier, Sania’s father Imran Mirza had stated that she took a ‘Khula’ from Shoaib to separate herself from the marriage.
Shoaib, who has not confirmed the rumours of his divorce from Sania, took fans by surprise when he shared his wedding pictures. The Pakistani cricketer tied the knot with Pakistani actor Sana Javed. Sania and Shoaib had remained tight-lipped about the reasons for their separation. However, a report suggested that Shoaib's extramarital affairs may have led to the breakdown of their marriage. For the unversed, Shoaib was earlier married to Ayesha Siddiqui before tying the knot with Sania in Hyderabad.
Sania had hinted at separation from Shoaib via a cryptic Instagram Story that read, “Marriage is hard. Divorce is hard. Choose your hard. Life will never be easy. It will always be hard. Choose your hard. Pick wisely.” Meanwhile, Sania and Shoaib have been co-parenting their five-year-old son Izhaan. Workwise, Sania announced her retirement from tennis last year.
