Vijay and Ajith
Both movies have massive runtimes with Varisu clocking in at 2 hours and 45 minutes and Thunive clocking in at 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Thunive will be Ajith's third collaboration with director H.Vinoth after 2019s Nerkonda Paarvai and 2022s Valimai.
While we do not have too many details about the plot of Thunivu , we do know that it is a heist movie and focuses on a team of professional mercenaries who are targetting banks across Tamil Nadu.
Varisu on the other hand will be Thalapathy Vijay's first collaboration with noted Telugu director Vamshi Paidipally. Vamshi is known for directing many hits in the Telugu industry such as Munna, Oopiri, and the recent Mahesh Babu starrer Maharshi. No doubt the director can recreate his success.
In the movie, Vijay plays the son of a business tycoon who has to take over the company after a series of unfortunate events.
Varisu will also mark the first time the actor will be paired with Rashmika Mandanna. The movie wrapped production in September and boasts an ensemble cast that includes Prabhu, R. Sarathkumar, Prakash Raj, Sangeetha, Khushbu, Ganesh Venkatraman, and Yogi Babu.
Meanwhile, Thunivu marks the first on-screen pairing of Ajith and National award-winning Malayalam actress Manju Warrier, this will be her second Tamil movie after 2019s Asuran in which she co-starred with Dhanush.
The movie boasts an impressive supporting cast that includes John Kokken, Samuthirakani, Mamathi Chari, Veera, Prem Kumar, Mahanadi Shankar, and Nayana Sa.
This will be the 7th time Vijay's and Ajith's movies have battled for the top spot at the box office, the last time was 8 years ago when Vijay 'Jilla' and Ajith's 'Veeram' clashed in 2007.
At the Telugu box office, both movies will be facing stiff competition from Chiranjeevi's Waltair Veerayya and Balakrishna's Veera Simha Reddy.
Both Varisu and Thunivu will hit theaters worldwide on January 12th, 2023.
