Of late, Nawazuddin Siddiqui has been facing legal troubles at the personal front over his divorce with wife Aaliya Siddiqui. In the fresh development, the actor has caught himself in another controversy over an advertisement for an international beverage giant. A petition has been filed against him and beverage giant, by a Kolkata lawyer who claims that the Bengali dubbing of the ad hurt the community.
According to reports, the petitioner has no problem with the main advertisement which is in Hindi. However, in the Bengali version, Nawazuddin can be seen laughing at one of the jokes,”‘hoja anguley ghee na uthley, Bangali khali petey ghumiye porey” which translates into, “Bengalis sleep hungry if they don’t get anything easily.” This joke cracked in the advertisement didn’t go down well with many Bengalis. For the unversed, the ad is based on the popular Bengali idiom, “Shoja anguley ghee na uthley, angul bekatey hoy”(If you can’t achieve something simply, you have to go beyond to achieve it).
The petitioner Dibyayan Benerji stated that the Bengali version attracts section 66A of the IT Act and also section 153 A of the Indian Penal Code. He submitted that this of gimmick should not be promoted in the future. Following the controversy and police complaint, the beverage giant apologised on Twitter saying, “We deeply regret our recent Bengali ad campaign for Sprite and are withdrawing this unintentional mistake from the Bengali media immediately. Our company gives due respect to the Bengali language and takes pride in platforms like Coke Studio Bangla, which attaches great importance to the respect and prestige of our Bengal. We are committed to preserving respect and the heritage of the state through our service, new investments, CSR, and social consciousness.” The advertisement was then pulled from TV and social media platforms.
Meanwhile, workwise, Nawazuddin was last seen in Heropanti 2 alongside Tiger Shroff and Tara Sutaria. He will next be seen in Afwaah directed by Sudhir Mishra, which also stars Bhumi Pednekar and Sumeet Vyas. He also has Jogira Sara Ra Ra, a comedy-drama, opposite Neha Sharma.
