Tovino Thomas in Nadikar
Malayalam star Tovino Thomas' latest movie Nadikar is all set to have its digital premiere soon. The film will start streaming on Netflix on June 27, nearly eight weeks after its initial theatrical release.
Typically, all Malayalam movies acquired by Netflix become available for streaming within four weeks of their theatrical launch. However, for some reason, Nadikar took longer than expected. It is also noteworthy that the movie didn't fare well at the box office, and the filmmakers had little reason to hold back its streaming release.

Is delaying the release of Nadikar on streaming a conscious effort to assuage the growing concerns of stakeholders in the box office business about OTT platforms threatening their existence? Or was it a decision by the streaming platform based on calendar planning? It's hard to tell at the moment.
Nadikar came as a small speedbump in Tovino Thomas' career, which otherwise was zipping through the corridors of cinemas across the world and creating new box office records. His survival drama 2018 created history last year by becoming the first Malayalam movie to cross the Rs 200 crore mark at the box office in record time. It also held the title of the biggest-ever hit in the history of Malayalam cinema until the release of Manjummel Boys earlier this year.

Tovino's cop drama Anweshippin Kandethum, which is also streaming on Netflix, made profits for its producers and earned good reviews from critics. However, Nadikar failed to strike a chord with both critics and the audience.
Nadikar enjoyed massive pre-release hype, and many expected it to give Tovino a hit along the lines of Thallumaala. Contrary to expectations, the film tanked at the box office, reportedly earning little more than Rs 5 crore against its Rs 40 crore production cost.
Based on the trailer, Nadikar seems to delve into the trappings of "star image" and the struggles of a superstar who seemingly wants to prove that he's more than just a pretty face. Helmed by Lal Jr., the film also stars Divya Pillai, Soubin Shahir, Balu Varghese, Suresh Krishna, and Bhavana.
