Malayalee From India OTT release date confirmed: When, where to watch this Nivin Pauly starrer?

SonyLIV confirmed on Wednesday the digital premiere date for the latest Malayalam movie, Malayalee From India. The film, starring Nivin Pauly in the lead role, will be available for streaming starting July 5, just over two months after its initial theatrical release.

Unlike in the past, the trend of early OTT releases appears to be shifting in the Malayalam film industry. Most films now refrain from streaming for at least 8 weeks after their theatrical debut. This trend seems to be solidifying amid efforts from stakeholders in the box office business, to combat the existential threat posed by the streaming era.

Alongside Malayalee From India, several other movies recently have also opted against early streaming releases. This has become somewhat of a norm in the Southern film industry, where new movies typically debut on streaming platforms after just a four-week theatrical run. However, this practice seems to be gradually changing, starting with the Malayalam film industry.

One of the primary reasons for this shift may be Malayalam filmmakers' efforts to reduce reliance on streaming platform revenue to offset losses from poor box office performance. In 2024, the Malayalam film industry has seen significant success, with many films breaking records at the box office. Streaming platforms have also reportedly become selective in acquiring rights to new movies prior to their theatrical releases.

Malayalee From India generated considerable buzz before its May 1 release, touted as a potential comeback vehicle for Nivin Pauly, who has been striving to achieve a major commercial hit. Directed by Dijo Jose Antony, the film received mixed reviews and did not perform strongly at the box office.

Malayalee From India also stars Dhyan Sreenivasan and Anaswara Rajan in lead roles.
