Madhya Pradesh High Court asks Centre if Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency is certified

After Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency was delayed, the Madhya Pradesh High Court asked the Centre to clarify if Emergency has been certified yet or not. The political-drama film has been accused of showcasing the Sikh community in a bad light and capable of inciting ‘anti-Sikh’ elements in the country. The film focuses upon the after-effects of Emergency which included the insurgency in Punjab and the eventual killing of Indira Gandhi.

According to latest reports, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has now asked the Centre to clarify if Emergency has been certified yet or not. The High Court even issued a notice on Public Interest Litigation (PIL) alleging that Sikh community has been shown in bad light in the movie. 

According to a report by Bar and Bench, Justice Sachdeva spoke about the PIL and said, "Sometimes the trailer does not portray the actual position ... On the contrary, During the COVID-19 lockdown in Delhi and world over, Sikh community was at the forefront of helping people.” 

Speaking about postponing Kangana Ranaut’s film, the actress said that an emergency has been imposed on her film too. 

After the film’s trailer was released on August 14, a PIL was filed at the High Court stating that the trailer depicts erroneous historical facts and that the film promotes ‘hatred towards Sikh community’. The petitioners are demanding the Centre and Central Board of Film Certification to cancel the certificate issued for film’s release in the public domain. 

On August 21, the SGPC and the Akal Takht demanded an immediate ban on Emergency, alleging that the film promotes ‘anti-Sikh sentiments’

The film depicts focuses upon the Emergency period that was put into motion by the Prime Minister herself and its causes, including the Operation Blue Star and the eventual killing of Indira Gandhi by her two Sikh bodyguards.
