Actor Lakshmi Manchu has accused her family, especially her father Mohan Babu, a seasoned star of the Telugu film industry, of sabotaging her career in movies. She has alleged that the prevailing patriarchal mentality in her family held her back from pursuing her acting aspirations.
She described her family as the "roadblock" and claimed that for a long time, the members of her family, particularly her father, went out of their way to persuade her to give up her dreams of pursuing a career in movies as an actor. "Men down South aren’t okay with heroes' sisters or daughters being actresses. They step back from casting people like us. Prakash introduced me to the movies, but my dad and his dad tried to get this idea out of our heads," she told The Free Press Journal.

Her brothers Manchu Manoj and Vishnu Manchu are also actors. Mohan Babu's children couldn't be as successful as he was in movies. Among his children, Vishnu Manchu has managed to make a name for himself to some extent.

Lakshmi revealed that she took up the advice of her close friends, Rana Daggubati and Rakul Preet Singh, and moved to Mumbai seeking better acting opportunities. "I am a victim of patriarchy. I had to fight for the things that my brothers get easily. It happened in my own family," she claimed.
Lakshmi was last seen in the Malayalam movie Monster, which had superstar Mohanlal in the lead role. The 2022 film marked her debut in Malayalam. However, it received poor reviews and subsequently tanked at the box office.
Lakshmi has also played a key role in the new Disney+ Hotstar web series, Yakshini.
