Kalki 2898 AD is the climax of Indian mythological epics, says Nag Ashwin

Director Nag Ashwin described his upcoming movie Kalki 2898 AD as the climax to the mythological threads of epic stories that we grew up listening to and watching on big screens. He noted that the Indian epic Mahabharatham is the main source of inspiration behind this epic sci-fi thriller that draws from the rich well of Indian mythology.

Before Kalki 2898 AD, Nag Ashwin directed typical commercial entertainers that dealt with the modern challenges of our society. However, it seems that movies like Yevade Subramanyam and Mahanati were his practice movies as he sharpened his skills to make one of India's biggest motion pictures.

"Patala Bhairavi is my favourite film from childhood. After that, I liked any film that tried something new, be it Bhairava Dweepam or Aditya 369, and some Hollywood movies like Star Wars. I always wondered, these movies were very good, but where are our stories? Why does everything only happen in the West," he revealed in a video, giving the audience a little background into the creative process that led to the Kalki cinematic universe.

Nag Ashwin suggested that Kalki 2898 AD is a thought experiment that tries to take the unresolved stories of Mahabharatham to their logical conclusion.

"Mahabharatham is our greatest battle ever written with the most number of characters. And it ends with Krishna avatar. This story is pure imagination of what happens when this story enters Kaliyugam," he added.

Kaliyugam can be described as the age of darkness or villains. The film dwells on the classic theme of good versus evil, set against the backdrop of a dystopian future. The film combines jaw-dropping elements of science fiction with the rich tapestry of mythology. Nag Ashwin revealed that he's curious to see the audience's reaction to the movie.

"Not just in India, but anybody in the world will be able to relate to this story. This film is the climax to all the mythologies and epics we have read so far," he added.

Kalki 2898 AD, starring Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Haasan, and Deepika Padukone, will hit the screens worldwide on June 27.
