Shine Tom Chacko on Devara and VFX-Dependent Films
Jr NTR’s latest action flick, Devara, has been making huge waves at the box office since its grand opening. However, the film has faced criticism from critics and audiences for its uninteresting plotline and predictable narrative. While the film has its ups and downs, one of the major appreciative points of the film was its CGI and VFX work incorporated into the production. With several underwater sequences, including a massive fight sequence featuring a CGI-made shark, the movie’s technical prowess shines through on the big screen.
Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko, who plays a pivotal role in the film, has recently garnered the attention of netizens for a viral video of his interview, which is now circulating widely across social media platforms.

Shine Tom Chacko on Devara's VFX works
In an earlier interview with The Indian Express, the actor spoke in length about movies being highly dependent on VFX. Highlighting Devara, he remarked that a huge portion of the Jr NTR film was filmed on a studio set, which is not usually done in many Malayalam films. He noted that the experience of studio shooting does not come close to the experience of shooting in live locations. The Malayalam actor said, “Everything from the islands to mountains and ships is created within the studio. I now understand the challenges faced in films like Jurassic Park and King Kong. We have to pretend we are in a forest or some other setting while actually being indoors.”

Expressing his dissatisfaction, the actor noted that shooting indoors can be ‘boring’ and lacks the challenge of working in real locations. He also shared his experience with Adithattu (2022) and explained that they filmed in the ocean due to budget constraints. However, he said that this of shooting tends to leave a lasting impression on audiences over time.
Big stars don't prefer outdoor locations, says Shine Tom Chacko
Speaking of his latest film, Devara, he emphasized that movies that are overly reliant on CGI or VFX may not hold up well in the future. Mentioning big stars such as Vijay and Jr NTR, the actor said, “It’s better to shoot in authentic locations. However, for stars like Jr NTR and Vijay, filming in such settings can be problematic because of crowd control issues."
Shine also took a swipe at superstars who don't perform simple tasks, like carrying a small item, as their assistants handle everything for them.
Devara, directed by Koratala Siva, stars Jr NTR, Saif Ali Khan, and Janhvi Kapoor in the leading roles.
