IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack trailer - Vijay Varma impresses as flight captain; Arvind Swamy and Pankaj Kapur reunite after Roja

Today, the OTT major Netflix dropped the most awaited trailer of IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. One has to admit and say that, right from the word go, the trailer has the audience on tenterhooks.

The trailer starts off with a customary announcement from the captain (played by Vijay Varma) who is addressing all the passengers on board. The only difference is that, the captain, after introducing himself, tells all the passengers that the flight has been hijacked.

This is followed by the hijackers unleashing fear in the minds of the hijacked passengers. Around the same time, there’s the flight captain (Vijay Varma) who announces on the mic that he is trying his level best to ensure that everyone reaches home on time. He does this while a hijacker is holding a gun on his neck!

What follows after that is the internal communication between the aircraft (ground) staff (Kumud Mishra) who informs his senior that there are as many as 176 passengers on board and that the hijackers have not demanded anything so far.

This, then, leads to all the characters played by Arvind Swamy, Dia Mirza, Pankaj Kapoor and others. Touted to be the ‘longest hijacking of a nation’. After the plane reaches Pakistan skies, Captain Vijay Varma tells the Lahore ATC (Air Traffic control) that they are completely out of fuel and utters ‘May Day’ three times.

For the unversed, the term ‘May Day’ in aviation, stands as an internationally documented anguish indication used by pilots to specify looming hazard or a life-threatening emergency state of affairs.

In no time, the netizens took to the comments section and started pouring in with their comments. While one user wrote, ‘While Vijay Verma is silently ruling in Bollywood, Pankaj Kapoorrr... Nasiruddin shahh.. naam hi kaafi hai dekhne k liye. Why did the makers choose to release it on OTT. A film like this should be released in theatres!’, another user wrote, ‘This movie deserves a blockbuster.. I can feel the vibe. It's phenomenal. Aravind Swami and Pankaj Kapoor back together after Roja in the early 90s in another kidnap/hijack drama. Good to see Anupam Tripathi from squid game. This is a real trailer... now I am hooked and waiting’.

The ‘limited series’ IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack stars an ensemble cast of Vijay Varma, Patralekhaa, Kumud Mishra, Manoj Pahwa, Kanwaljeet Singh, Sushant Singh, Aditya Srivastava, Rajeev Thakur, Pankaj Kapur, Naseeruddin Shah, Arvind Swami, Dia Mirza, Amrita Puri, Anupam Tripathi, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, and Yashpal Sharma.

While the film has been directed by Anubhav Sinha, it has been created by him along with Trishant Srivastava. The series is being produced by Matchbox Shots and Benaras Mediaworks, with Sarita Patil and Sanjay Routray as producers.

The gripping series will be streamed on Netflix from August 29.
