Grammy Awards 2024: India wins big in the Global Music category, Shankar Mahadevan-Zakir Hussain's Shakti bags the trophy

Today, the 66th Grammy Awards 2024 occurred in Los Angeles (February 5). It was a proud moment for India as music maestros Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain’s fusion band Shakti won the Best Global Music Album on the occasion. They bagged the award for their album ‘This Moment.’

The official X account of the Grammy Awards shared a picture of Mahadevan and his band member Ganesh Rajagopalan accepting the award. They captioned the same stating, “Congrats Best Global Music Album winner - 'This Moment' Shakti. #GRAMMYs.” Take a look at the same.

Shankar got a loud cheer from the audience as he gave out his heartwarming acceptance speech. The ‘Ma Tujhe Salaam’ singer said, “Thank you boys. Thank you God, family, friends, and India. India, we are proud of you…Last but not the least, I would like to dedicate this award to my wife whom every note of my music is dedicated to.”

Talking about the album ‘This Moment’, it was released on June 30, 2023. It had eight songs by John McLaughlin (guitar synth), Zakir Hussain (tabla), Shankar Mahadevan (vocalist), V Selvaganesh (percussionist), and Ganesh Rajagopalan (violinist). They defeated the likes of Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy, and Davido to win the award.

Apart from this, Zakir also won the Best Global Music Performance for ‘Pashto’ with Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer. It also featured Rakesh Chaurasia, a virtuoso flute player. Zakir Hussain won a whopping three Grammys in a night while Rakesh Chaurasia won two Awards.

One of the fans reacted to Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain’s Shakti winning at the Grammy Awards. The comment read, “This right there is the only well-deserved award.” Earlier a fan said, “This album and this band, still can’t get the Ryman auditorium concert outta my head @shankar.mahadevan all the best. This one is in the bag already.” Desimartini wishes the entire team of Shakti for making our country proud.
