Filmmakers are trying to impress, changing genres: Anurag Kashyap on failing Bollywood

Bollywood is facing back-to-back failures at the box office, while the South industry is making moolah with blockbuster hits like Pushpa, KGF 2, and RRR among others. Amid this, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap shared his opinion saying that Hindi films are not rooted in culture, and that’s why they are not working. He also feels that filmmakers’ experiments with genres that they don’t usually do are also one of the reasons behind the failing Bollywood.

Kashyap was interacting with the media during the trailer launch of his upcoming movie Dobaara with producer Ekta Kapoor . When asked why are South films overpowering Bollywood, he replied, “Because our Hindi films are not rooted, this is the simple answer. When you see Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam films, they’re rooted in their culture, whether that’s mainstream or non-mainstream culture. But our films are not rooted,” he said.

He further added that mainstream filmmakers are trying their hand in genres only to impress. “Here, people who can’t speak Hindi, who speak English, are making Hindi films. Wherever the films are rooted, they work. When our mainstream filmmakers make their kind of films, they work. Gangubai Kaethiawadi, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 worked because the two filmmakers made the kind of films they usually make. Other filmmakers are attempting to make those films which they don’t usually, they’re trying to impress, changing genres. The moment we go rooted, our films will work,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kashyap is himself attempting a new genre of science fiction with Do Baara. He has earlier made dark films like Black Friday, Gangs Of Wasseypur, and Dev D among others. Talking about Dobaara, the film is reportedly the remake of the Spanish drama Mirage. The film stars Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati in the lead roles. The film is slated to hit theatres on August 19.
