Filmmaker Kiran Rao has been an integral part of the Hindi film industry since the last 23 years. She began her career as an assistant director to Ashutosh Gowariker on Lagaan before going on to become a successful producer. In 2010, Rao made her directorial debut with Dhobi Ghat starring Prateik Babbar, Aamir Khan and Monica Dogra. Well, 14 long years later, Kiran is ready to return to theatres with her second directorial film, titled Laapataa Ladies. But what took her so long?
In an exclusive interview with Desimartini, when asked what took her so many years to return to the director’s chair, Kiran shared, “I’ve been working for the last decade plus on my stories, my own ideas. Some are feature scripts and some are series. But I never got to the point that I was very very happy with the complete script. So, it was an ongoing kind of struggle for me and in 2018 Aamir (Khan) sort of found this script. He was a judge in a script competition, screenwriting competition and when I heard the story I really felt like this is it, this is what I want to make as my second film.”
She went on to add, “It’s been 6 years since then, so time flies in some way. COVID happened and it was only in 2020 that we were able to acquire this script from the original writer, Biplab Goswami, and then I got into the process of having it rewritten by a wonderful screenwriter called Sneha Desai. So it takes time. At the same time I have been developing other projects. So hopefully now they’ll see the light of day.” When asked if we will see any of her series on the digital platform, Kiran revealed, “I really really hope so. I have a couple of very fun series, honestly, that I’m working on. So yeah, hopefully soon.”
Laapataa Ladies, co-producer by Aamir Khan, is all set to arrive in theatres on 1st March.
