The 2009 Avatar was groundbreaking not only due to its commercial and critical success but also for its revolutionary use of CGI and motion capture technology that still holds up. Director James Cameron created and used new technology and now with Avatar 2 , he has done it again.
Avatar 2 which will feature a lot of underwater sequences uses a never before seen underwater motion capture technology created by Cameron and his company Lightstorm Entertainment .
Before underwater mo-cap meant actors would be suspended in the air using wires in order to capture their expressions and moments and the water later added by CGI.
But thanks to this new tech, the actors were actually lowered into a 900,000-gallon tank and their performances were captured in real-time, so the final product is going to be unlike anything we have seen.
The CGI for the movie is still being worked on and will continue to be perfected until its release, while it is unusual for movies to work on the post-production effects till release knowing how much of a perfectionist James Cameron is, this comes as no surprise.
Avatar: The Way of Water has had a troubled production mainly the budget as well as the long gap between the first movie and its sequel with studios worrying if fans would still have an interest in returning to the world of Pandora.
The long gap between the two movies was because of director James Cameron's insistence on waiting until the technology he needed to create his vision was ready to use.
While many people are skeptical of Avatar 2 repeating the success of Avatar, it should be noted that similar skepticism excited before the first movie came out and it went on to be the highest grossing movie of all time.
The cast of the movie includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet.
Avatar 2 will hit theaters on December 16, 2022.
