Exploring the world of Westeros: What we know about the Game of Thrones spinoffs in development
The prequel series House of the Dragon debuted in August 2022, and HBO is reportedly developing additional spinoffs.

Since the conclusion of the immensely popular Game of Thrones in May 2019, HBO has been actively developing multiple spinoff series. The first, the highly anticipated prequel series House of the Dragon, premiered in August 2022. Additionally, HBO is reportedly working on other projects, including a series based on another beloved book series by author George R. R. Martin.
House of the Dragon
Adapted from George R. R. Martin's 2018 prequel book Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon is co-created by Martin himself. The series delves into the history of House Targaryen, the dynasty that ultimately includes characters like Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke) from Game of Thrones.

Set during the reign of King Viserys (portrayed by Paddy Considine), the story unfolds as Viserys, faced with the absence of a male heir, is compelled to name his daughter Rhaenyra (played by Emma D'Arcy) as his successor after the tragic death of his son.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
In April 2023, Variety reported that HBO had ordered a prequel series based on George R. R. Martin's series of novellas, The Tales of Dunk and Egg. The show received a straight-to-series order. Set 90 years before the events of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire" series, which inspired Game of Thrones, the series follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, known as Dunk, a knight who later joins the Kingsguard, and his young squire, Aegon V Targaryen, also known as Egg, who eventually ascends to the throne as king.
9 Voyages, Flea Bottom and 10,000 Ships
In March 2021, Deadline revealed that HBO was working on three new spinoff ideas set in George R. R. Martin's world. These projects include 9 Voyages, which will reportedly center on Corlys Velaryon, also known as the Sea Snake, and is to be led by Bruno Heller a series set in Flea Bottom, the impoverished district in King's Landing; and a show focused on the 10,000 Ships, a reference to the legendary journey undertaken by warrior queen Princess Nymeria.
Untitled Animated Show
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, HBO Max is in the early stages of developing an animated drama set in the Game of Thrones universe. Despite its animated format, the series is said to target an adult audience.In a 2022 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, George R. R. Martin expressed enthusiasm about the progress of the animated shows, praising the stunning concept art.
A sequel series focused on Jon Snow
In June 2022, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that HBO was in the initial phases of creating a sequel series centered on Jon Snow. The outlet also mentioned that Kit Harington, who originally portrayed the iconic character, is set to return to the role.
Prequel focused on Aegon's Conquest
On February 8, The Hollywood Reporter published an article outlining HBO's intentions to develop a direct prequel to the highly acclaimed House of the Dragon. Collaborating with Mattson Tomlin, a writer for the upcoming 2025 film The Batman Part II.
HBO aims to delve into the story of Aegon Targaryen, the first ruler of the Targaryen dynasty. Aegon, alongside his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya and their three dragons, achieved the unification of six of the Seven Kingdoms under his reign.
