BTS created BTS! 'Pop Star Academy: KATSEYE' documentary trailer ignites ARMY fury over HYBE creating the boy group

A year-long process of creating a one-of-a-kind girl group will be the subject of the upcoming Netflix documentary series, "POP STAR ACADEMY: KATSEYE". The series will offer a compelling portrayal of the journey to global stardom, including insights into the unique training and development program from HYBE and Geffen Records.

While many are appreciating the docu-series, it has also ignited the fury of ARMY—the fandom of BTS—in particular.

The line, "The people who created BTS have the vision to take the 'K' out of K-Pop and make it global," has provoked strong reactions. ARMY have been irritated by the implication that HYBE or BigHit Music were solely responsible for BTS' success. 

They argue that while these companies discovered the seven members — RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook — it was the idols themselves who dedicated their "Blood, Sweat, and Tears" to achieve their current status. Fans also pointed out that BTS has been a major factor in globalizing K-pop and that the group's diverse musical range often transcends typical K-pop boundaries.

About the series:

The series, directed by award-winning director Nadia Hallgren, known for her work on the Emmy-nominated documentary 'Becoming', will offer a deep dive into the world of music and stardom. The series has been produced by HYBE, Interscope Films, and Boardwalk Pictures and will stream on Netflix on August 21, 2024.

The series will follow 20 contestants from all around the world as they compete for the title of "KATSEYE", a one-of-a-kind worldwide female group formed utilizing K-Pop principles.

This eight-episode documentary will provide extraordinary access and a compelling account of the route to international celebrity. It will also take a detailed look at HYBE and Geffen Records' unique training and development program.

Where is BTS?

Kim Namjoon, Min Yoongi, Jung Hoseok, Park Jimin, Kim Taehyung, and Jeon Jung-kook have all enlisted in South Korea's mandatory military service. 

Kim Seokjin, the group's eldest member, was the first to join and also the first to be released from his duties. He was also one of 11,000 torchbearers for the Paris 2024 Olympics, which caused BTS fans to cheer and be proud.

The seven Korean men who went on hiatus to finish their obligatory service promised fans that they would return by 2025.
