Decades later, Diane Keaton still pondered why she was cast in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather. The filmmaker, in a nostalgic AMA session on his Instagram Stories, invited fans to inquire about his life and career. Among the responses was a question from the Book Club: The Next Chapter actress herself. Coppola shared Keaton's query with his followers: "Why on Earth did you choose me for The Godfather?!!"
The Oscar-winning actress assumed the role of Kay Adams-Corleone, the wife of Al Pacino's Michael Corleone, in the 1972 film, which swiftly attained cult classic status.
Unveiling the Mystery Behind Diane Keaton's Casting
The director replied to her inquiry, stating that he chose her because, although she was to portray the more conventional wife, there was something deeper, funnier, and very intriguing about her, and he turned out to be right.
Following her rise to stardom with The Godfather, Keaton revisited her role in the franchise, appearing in 1974's The Godfather Part II and 1990's The Godfather Part III. In 2020, a reedited version of the third film, titled The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, was released to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original cut.

At present, Francis Ford Coppola is immersed in his forthcoming project, Megalopolis. The acclaimed director has intermittently pursued his passion project since the '80s, but it appears that he is now gearing up to unveil the film later this year. The sci-fi drama purportedly revolves around an architect's quest to reconstruct New York City as a utopia in the aftermath of a catastrophic event.
Megalopolis features a stellar ensemble cast including Adam Driver, Aubrey Plaza, Giancarlo Esposito, Laurence Fishburne, Forest Whitaker, Dustin Hoffman, Chloe Fineman, Shia LaBeouf, Talia Shire, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jason Schwartzman, and Jon Voight.
Filming concluded on March 30, 2023, and the premiere is anticipated later this year at the Cannes Film Festival.
