The reason behind Andre Braugher's passing has surfaced. The Brooklyn Nine-Nine actor, who passed away at 61 on Monday, had his representative initially confirm the death resulted from a recent illness. However, it has now been disclosed that Braugher succumbed to lung cancer. The timeline of his diagnosis remains unknown.
Andre Braugher's Stellar Career
The acclaimed actor celebrated for his performances in renowned crime series like Homicide: Life on the Street and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, amassed a remarkable 11 Emmy nominations in his career. Securing two Emmy victories, the first in 1998 for his portrayal of Det. Frank Pemberton in Homicide.
The second for his character Nick Atwater in Thief, he left an indelible mark. Additionally, his role as Capt. Raymond Holt in Brooklyn Nine-Nine earned him four Emmy nominations.
Versatile Talents
Embarking on his acting journey in 1989, Braugher made his debut alongside Denzel Washington in Glory and collaborated with Telly Savalas on Kojak. His diverse credits encompass City of Angels, Salt, Law & Order, Salem's Lot, and the upcoming Netflix series, The Residence. Braugher's excellence extends to the stage, earning Obie Awards for his standout performances in Henry V and The Whipping Man.
After the news of Braugher's passing, his fellow cast members started expressing their tributes to his legacy. "Can't believe you're gone so soon," shared Terry Crews, Braugher's co-star from Brooklyn Nine-Nine, in a heartfelt Instagram post.
"I'm honored to have known you, laughed with you, worked with you, and shared 8 glorious years watching your irreplaceable talent," continued Crews, aged 55. Viola Davis paid homage to her co-star in ABC's second Live in Front of a Studio Audience special with a touching Instagram tribute. She expressed, "Heartbreaking. You went way too soon."
Shonda Rhimes, the producer of his final project, The Residence, posted a photo of Braugher on Instagram, expressing profound sorrow at the news of his passing. She wrote, "Deeply saddened by the news."
Hailing from Chicago and a graduate of both Stanford University and Juilliard, Braugher leaves behind his wife, Ami Brabson, and their children: John Wesley Braugher, Michael Braugher, and Isaiah Braugher.
