Under their fresh agreement with Amazon MGM Studios, Patrick McKay and JD Payne, the showrunners of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, are currently engaged in crafting storylines for Season 3 of the Prime Video series. This development coincides with Prime Video's preparations for the Season 2 premiere of the series later this year.
While a Season 3 writers room has not been established yet, the showrunners are actively developing the initial story outline. The studio indicates that Season 3 of The Rings of Power will probably be filmed at Shepperton Studios in the U.K. through a new production facility. The previous two seasons were shot at Bray Studios.
Payne and McKay's Expansion
Payne and McKay served as both writers and executive producers for Season 1 of "The Rings of Power" and continued as showrunners for Season 2. They have recently inked an exclusive overall agreement with Amazon MGM Studios to establish their own production company, 10:40 PM Productions.
According to the terms of the three-year agreement, Amazon MGM Studios retains exclusive rights to all television projects. Amazon reports that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which premiered in the fall of 2022, emerged as the top-performing Amazon Original in every region and debuted at the number one spot on Nielsen's streaming chart.
The Future of 'The Rings of Power
Amazon also reveals that as production for Season 3 approaches, the series will transition from Bray Studios to a new location within the U.K., specifically to a fresh production facility situated nearby at Shepperton Studios. The Rings of Power made its debut on Prime Video in 2022. Even before its premiere, Amazon had already announced in 2019 that the series would be renewed for a second season, scheduled to premiere later this year.
Set thousands of years before the narratives of J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings,' this epic drama traces the journey of an ensemble cast comprising both familiar and new characters as they grapple with the ominous resurgence of evil in Middle-earth.
