At the 96th Academy Awards in Los Angeles, Emma Stone took home the Oscar for Best Actress for her portrayal of Bella Baxter in Poor Things. The period fantasy comedy, adapted from Alasdair Gray's novel, is directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and features Mark Ruffalo, Willem Dafoe, and Ramy Youssef in supporting roles.
Stone emerged victorious in a competitive field that included the highly anticipated Lily Gladstone for Killers of the Flower Moon, Sandra Hüller for Anatomy of a Fall, and Carey Mulligan for Maestro. This win marks Stone's second Best Actress award, following her previous triumph in 2017 for La La Land.
Emma Stone's Oscar Victory
Previously, she received two nominations for Best Supporting Actress, for Birdman in 2015 and The Favourite in 2019, though she did not secure a win for either. However, her performance in Poor Things garnered her several accolades, including the BAFTA for Best Actress and the Golden Globe for Best Female Actor in a Musical or Comedy.
Her second Oscar win places her among esteemed company, including Meryl Streep, Jane Fonda, and Jodie Foster, who have all won the Best Actress award twice. “My dress is broken,” she began, “I think it happened during I’m Just Ken.” Visibly overwhelmed, Stone addressed her main rival, Gladstone, expressing her admiration: “I'm in awe of you."
She concluded by expressing gratitude to the team behind Poor Things, including Yorgos Lanthimos: “Thank you for this gift of a lifetime in the role of Bella.” Stone then extended thanks to her parents, brother, husband, and her daughter.
