Dakota Johnson leads a fresh take on the superhero genre with Madame Web, a film rooted in the Spider-Man universe. Portraying Cassandra Webb, a New York City paramedic gifted with clairvoyant abilities, Johnson's character embarks on a journey of discovery. Her newfound powers entwine her fate with three young women: Julia Cornwall (played by Sydney Sweeney), Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor), and Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced).
The group encounters Ezekiel Sims (played by Tahar Rahim), a masked figure with abilities to foresee the future, a trait familiar to fans of the Spider-Man franchise.
Exploring the Marvel Comics Origins
Madame Web draws inspiration from the Marvel Comics character of the same name, who debuted in a 1980 comic as an elderly medium encountered by Peter Parker. She possesses superhuman abilities closely linked to Spider-Man and other spider-powered characters from the comic books. In the movie, Sweeney, O'Connor, and Merced portray younger iterations of characters who have taken on the identities of Spider-Woman and Spider-Girl in various comic storylines.
Expanding the Spider-Verse
The latest film is part of Sony's expansive Spider-Man universe, which commenced with 2018's Venom, featuring Tom Hardy. The studio has a rich history of producing Spider-Man films led by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, as well as the animated Spider-Verse movies.
Sony co-produces Tom Holland's Spider-Man films in collaboration with Marvel Studios. Madame Web is being released alongside the third Venom installment and the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, slated for later in 2024. These films and 2022's Morbius focus on characters connected to Spider-Man, expanding the universe Sony has been cultivating.
Although Spider-Man has not made an appearance in these movies, Madame Web includes familiar characters and references. Adam Scott portrays Ben Parker, known to Spider-Man fans as Peter's uncle, whose demise is pivotal to the hero's origin story.
Emma Roberts portrays Mary Parker, Peter's future mother. Several characters featured in Madame Web also appeared in Sony's 2023 animated film Across the Spider-Verse, highlighting the broader interconnected universe of spider-powered heroes. However, despite these connections, the new movie is intended to stand alone, telling its own independent story.
