Emma Stone is shedding light on some of the intriguing challenges encountered during the filming of 2023's Poor Things. The actress who garnered another Academy Awards nomination for her portrayal of Bella Baxter in the film, participated in a panel discussion at Saturday's Celebration of the Nominees for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures. During the conversation, she shared a dietary obstacle she encountered while shooting Poor Things.
When questioned about the challenge of portraying "an explicitly sexual character," Stone clarified that it wasn't difficult. She elaborated, emphasizing that Bella's sexuality was just another aspect of her character. Stone discussed the meticulous planning involved in depicting Bella's sexuality, highlighting the presence of an incredible intimacy coordinator, closed sets, and the careful approach to filming.

Navigating Bella Baxter's Complexities
Stone shared that the real challenge was capturing Baxter's different emotions and quirks. She mentioned the character's eating habits, like figuring out how to handle devouring 60 Portuguese tarts—starting off delicious but ending in a desire to puke. Stone added that portraying Baxter's first experiences with death and decay was tougher than handling nudity.
Emma Stone Shines in Yorgos Lanthimos Film
In the Yorgos Lanthimos film, Stone portrays a character who comes into being when Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe) transplants the brain of a deceased woman's baby into her body following the woman's suicide. Stone's portrayal has already garnered her numerous awards this year, including the Best Leading Actress accolade at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards last weekend.
Stone has already clinched the Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Award for her performance in the movie. However, at Saturday's SAG Awards, while she was nominated, the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role award was claimed by Lily Gladstone for her role in Killers of the Flower Moon.
