With James Gunn and Peter Safran taking over the DC Studios a lot of previously planned projects and spinoffs were canceled including two Aquaman spinoffs.

The first was a horror movie set in the deep trenches., which was seen in the third act of 2017's Aquaman, and a spinoff focusing on Yahya Abdul-Mateen II's Balck Manta.

In a recent interview, James Wan talked about the canceled Balck Manta spinoff and revealed that elements from that storyline have been added to Aquaman 2.

For the uninitiated Black Manta is a mercenary who has access to Atlantean technology and uses his skills to get revenge on Arthur Curry, who he blames for the death of his father.

What to Expect in 'The Lost Kingdom'

In the sequel, Balck Manta gains the powers of the Black Trident, a powerful weapon that holds the powers of Abyssal Dark Magic, which was created by ancient demons of the sea.

The trident gives its user not only the power to command sea creatures but also people as well, this forces Aquaman to team up with his brother Orm aka Ocean Master stop the new threat.

Orm was the main antagonist of the first movie and was defeated in combat by Aquaman at the end of the first movie and sent to prison.

Director James Gun had said that the relationship between the brothers will be a major focus of the sequel and described their dynamic as a buddy cop movie.

Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom will be the final movie in the old DCEU lineup, which will be rebooted in 2024 with James Gunn's Superman: Leacy.

Aquaman 2 had to go through multiple reshoots following negative reactions to multiple early screenings, so it remains to be seen how the last movie of the DCEU will hold up.
