If Chris Evans is making a comeback as Captain America on the big screen, he seems to be out of the loop. "I always come across those reports," the 42-year-old actor shared on The View Monday in response to rumors about rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. "And it's news to me."
Evans mentioned that every few months, there are speculations about the return of actors like Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, and others. However, he clarified, "No one's spoken to me about it."
The End of an Era
Having portrayed Steve Rogers/Captain America, a pivotal member of the Avengers, the actor appeared in 11 films spanning from 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger to 2019’s Avengers: Endgame. In the latter, the character bid farewell through time travel, marking the conclusion of Evans' journey in the MCU.
Speculations regarding the return of characters like Black Widow (Johansson) or Iron Man (Downey Jr.)—both presumed deceased after the events of Endgame—have circulated, fueled by talks reported by Variety earlier this month about the possibility of bringing them back.
Navigating the Future
"Never say never," Evans shared with The View co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Alyssa Farah Griffin, and Ana Navarro when discussing the possibility of returning to his iconic role. He emphasized, "I'm very protective. It's a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right."
The mantle of Captain America has been passed on to Sam Wilson/The Falcon, portrayed by Anthony Mackie. Set to lead in "Captain America: Brave New World" in 2025, Mackie's character now wields Steve's iconic shield. Evans affirmed this transition in a tweet last year, stating, "Sam Wilson is Captain America."
So, there you have it! Chris Evans isn't ruling out a return as Captain America, but he's playing it cool, emphasizing that it has to be just right. Meanwhile, Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson has taken up the iconic shield, gearing up for the upcoming "Brave New World" in 2025.
