Bella Thorne now has two films lined up to direct in 2024. Following the recent news of her feature directorial debut with Color Your Hurt, the actress-turned-filmmaker will next take the helm for Ash Beneath the Current. The film is scheduled to begin production this summer, following Thorne's completion of post-production on Color Your Hurt.
Based on a story by Thorne, which she adapted alongside Leaf Lieber, Ash Beneath the Current will be filmed at Tuscany Film Studios in Italy, the new facility opened by Andrea Iervolino. Iervolino will produce the film, with Jen Gatien and Mark Emms serving as executive producers.
A Journey of Survival and Self-Discovery
Ash Beneath the Current follows the journey of a young woman who returns home after a decade away to attend her beloved sister's funeral. However, she becomes stranded on a secluded cove, cut off from civilization. In her struggle to survive, she delves into the depths of grief, family dynamics, and the resilience of the human spirit.
"I’m beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to step into the director’s chair once again," said Thorne. She added that she is an avid fan of horror movies and drew from her own struggles and experiences while writing the screenplay.
Thorne's Directorial Journey
To prepare for her role in the director’s chair, Thorne recently wrote and directed two short films: Unsettled, currently in post-production, and Paint Her Red, which debuted at the 2023 Taormina Film Festival."Bella's discovery was a remarkable moment," said Iervolino. He had long admired her acting talent, but it was her short film showcased at the Taormina Film Festival that truly revealed her prowess as a director.
Ash Beneath the Current marks the beginning of what he believes will be a fruitful partnership, with many exceptional projects on the horizon, continued Iervolino. He went on to express that providing studios in Italy for this venture fills him with immense joy, as he anticipates an extraordinary journey ahead.
