Anne Hathaway denies the Harry Styles connection in The Idea of You
Despite author Robinne Lee and actor Nicholas Galitzine suggesting that his character was inspired by the pop star, Hathaway refutes any connection.

Anne Hathaway is clarifying the narrative surrounding her new rom-com, The Idea of You. Adapted from Robinne Lee's 2017 novel of the same name, the story revolves around a divorced mother who embarks on a whirlwind romance with a younger pop star. While the film has sparked comparisons to Harry Styles, Hathaway sets the record straight about any intentional resemblance.
When questioned about any connection between The Idea of You and Styles' relationship with Olivia Wilde, Hathaway reportedly responded to Extra with a firm "No, just no." The actress emphasized that the movie is centered around the theme of recovering from a broken heart.
The Influence of Harry Styles on The Idea of You
In Lee's book and the Michael Showalter-directed adaptation, Solène brings her daughter to the Coachella Music Festival to witness the renowned boy band, August Moon. While the author did confirm that the lead singer character, 24-year-old Hayes Campbell, drew inspiration from Styles, a former member of the global sensation One Direction.
Galitzine also confirmed that he drew inspiration from Styles while shaping his portrayal of Hayes. The Red, White & Royal Blue actor explained to Buzzfeed that he and the filmmakers aimed to develop a character that felt reminiscent of the real-life pop star.
Hathaway's Insights on Her Character
Hathaway elaborated to Extra about her character, who initially enters her romance with Hayes expecting it to be casual. However, as the story unfolds, Solène comes to the realization that it holds deeper significance. If she chooses to fully engage in the relationship, she understands that she will need to let go of certain aspects of her life.
The actress-producer also praised Galitzine for his impressive vocal talents, noting that he performed his own vocals both during auditions and in the movie itself. The Idea of You is set to premiere on Prime Video on May 2
