As we step into the New Year, a fresh awards season is upon us. The Golden Globes is set to kick things off promptly on Jan. 7, featuring comedian Jo Koy as the host. The ceremony will celebrate outstanding achievements in television and film across 29 categories, potentially marking a triumphant return after several years of controversies. Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions, the show's long-time producer, have taken over the reins from the beleaguered Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Nominations Galore
Among the acclaimed shows, Barbie takes the lead with nine nominations, securing recognition in categories like Best Picture and acting nods for Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Not far behind is Barbenheimer, the Christopher Nolan drama, with eight nominations and Golden Globes love for Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt.

On the television front, Succession maintains its award show dominance, garnering nine nominations, eight of which are for its cast. A surprise breakout comedy, Jury Duty, also makes a mark with two nods. The 81st annual event will introduce two fresh categories: Cinematic Box Office Achievement in Motion Pictures, honoring some of the year's most successful films, and Best Stand-Up Comedian on Television.

The 2024 Golden Globes telecast, a three-hour event, will kick off at 5 p.m. PT on CBS, the CBS app, and at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET. The 81st Golden Globes ceremony will be guided by the comedic talents of Jo Koy as the host.
Expressing his excitement, Jo Koy stated in a release on Dec. 21, "I've stepped onto a lot of stages around the world in my career, but this one is going to be extra special. The Golden Globes pay tribute to outstanding nominees in both television and film, featuring a total of 29 categories, comprising 15 awards for motion pictures and 14 for television.
In the film categories, frontrunners for the 81st Golden Globes include Barbie, leading with 9 nominations, securing nods in categories like Best Picture, Best Actress (Margot Robbie), and Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling). Oppenheimer follows closely with 8 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), and Best Supporting Actress (Emily Blunt).
In the television category, Succession takes the lead with nine nominations, dominating the Best Actor category with Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin, and Jeremy Strong all earning nods. The series also secures nominations for Best Actress (Sarah Snook) and supporting roles, with Matthew Macfadyen, Alexander Skarsgård, Alan Ruck, and J. Smith-Cameron receiving honors.
