Will Smith opens up about I Am Legend 2: The actor confirms sequel and his return to the iconic role

Will Smith has shared exciting updates on the swift progress of 'I Am Legend 2,' confirming the involvement of both himself and Michael B. Jordan, along with the delivery of an initial script. The news of this reboot for the post-apocalyptic action thriller blockbuster, which originally grossed over $585 million in 2007, emerged earlier this year. The project gained momentum when 'I Am Legend' writer Akiva Goldsman reunited with Warner Bros., entering into a new first-look deal.

Will Smith's Call with Michael B. Jordan

During an In Conversation session at Saudi Arabia's Red Sea Film Festival on Saturday evening, Will Smith shared that he was scheduled to have a call with Michael B. Jordan the following day. Expressing their close relationship, he divulged, "I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow. We’re really close. I am probably giving up too much information…the script just came in."

Smith also outlined the production's strategy to address the challenge of his character's demise in the original film, U.S. army virologist Robert Neville. He revealed, "We’re going with the mythology of the DVD version where my character lives, and I can’t tell you anymore." This innovative approach involves embracing an alternate ending that appeared in a special DVD edition released in 2008.

Navigating Fame

Engaging with a young audience of fans and aspiring filmmakers at the Red Sea event, Will Smith embraced one of his initial public speaking engagements since the 2022 incident at the Academy Awards when he slapped Chris Rock. While the actor, producer, and rapper did not directly address the incident or its aftermath during the conversation, there were subtle allusions in some of his responses, hinting at the experiences of the past 18 months.

In a contemplative moment, Will Smith shares his wisdom on fame, advising caution against relying on applause or validation as a guide to one's actions. Delving into the intricacies of celebrity, he warns of the pitfalls of being swayed by public opinion, highlighting the delicate balance required to navigate the highs and lows of fame.

In addition to 'I Am Legend 2,' Will Smith is immersed in over a dozen projects at different stages of development, including 'Bad Boys 4,' currently in post-production. However, Smith disclosed his personal aspirations to impart his wealth of experience and knowledge to a new generation of filmmakers. 

Expressing his interest in the transfer of knowledge, he stated, "Right now, the thing I’m interested in is the transfer of knowledge. I really want to teach. I really want to teach filmmaking. I want to work with people in big movies."
