The Stars Align
The stars, joined by Vogue's Anna Wintour, will host guests at the museum for an exhibition titled "Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion." Described by Vogue, this year's theme, "Garden of Time," diverges from the Brothers Grimm or Disney, instead celebrating clothing and fashion so delicate that they can never be worn again.
Anticipate a diverse array of fashion exhibits, spanning from a 17th-century Elizabethan-era English bodice, capturing the essence of the natural world—its fragility and inevitable decay. Alongside these delicate pieces, contemporary yet equally spirited garments will be featured, divided into three sub-themes: Land, Sea, and Sky.
A Fusion of Literature and Fashion
Vogue also highlighted that the dress code was influenced by a short story of the same name penned by JG Ballard in 1962. (Ballard's The Empire of the Sun was later adapted into a film by Steven Spielberg.) This annual Benefit occurs on the first Monday of May, signifying the commencement of The Costume Institute's spring exhibition. Under the guidance of Met Trustee Wintour, the Benefit has thus far generated over $223.5 million in support of The Costume Institute.
The 2024 Met Gala is scheduled for May 6. The previous year's Met Gala, featuring a Karl Lagerfeld theme, garnered significant attention for its memorable red carpet appearances, including Doja Cat and Jared Leto, the latter dressed as Lagerfeld's cat Choupette. Jessica Chastain paid homage to the late designer's style, showcasing various iconic Chanel motifs such as camellias and pearls.
