Gerard Butler set to reprise role from 'How To Train Your Dragon' in Universal's live-action adaptation

Universal Pictures is reviving the DreamWorks Animation franchise How to Train Your Dragon in a live-action adaptation, and familiar talent is returning. Gerard Butler, known for voicing Hiccup's father Stoick in the original movies, is set to reprise his role. The film will feature Mason Thames and Nico Parker in the lead roles of Hiccup and Astrid, respectively, under the direction, writing, and production of Dean DeBlois.

Continuing the Epic Saga

Scheduled for release on June 13, 2025, the upcoming film promises to immerse audiences in DreamWorks Animation's rich imaginative universe. Building upon a cohesive narrative, the new installment continues the adventures of Hiccup and Toothless, a duo that has enthralled fans through three previous films, collectively grossing over $1.6 billion.

Behind the Scenes

The live-action film is being produced by Marc Platt through his Universal-based production company, Marc Platt Productions. Joining him is Adam Siegel, President of Marc Platt Productions. Lexi Barta, Vice President of Production, will supervise the film on behalf of Universal.

While the studio opted for fresh faces to portray Hiccup and Astrid, given the original voice actors have aged into adulthood, the opportunity to bring back Gerard Butler as Stoick was irresistible. Butler, renowned for his dynamic roles in action films such as the Olympus Has Fallen franchise and 300, garnered a fan following for his portrayal in How to Train Your Dragon. His return allows the studio to pay a fitting tribute to the cherished original cast.

Butler continues to be one of the most prolific action stars in the industry, as evidenced by the upcoming releases of the thrillers Plane and Kandahar later this year. Additionally, fans can anticipate the sequel to his 2018 action film, Den of Thieves.
