T20 World Cup 2024: Group A breakdown and Top 8 predictions post-IND vs PAK thriller

Group A teams: India, United States, Canada, Pakistan, Ireland

INDIA (4 points | 1.455 NRR)

With two wins from two games, the Men in Blue have defeated Ireland and now Pakistan. The team has a handy NRR and appears well on their way to entering the second round. A win against either the USA or Canada will seal their spot.

UNITED STATES (4 points | 0.626 NRR)

Unexpectedly and surprising everyone, the co-hosts are sitting in the second spot. After defeating Canada in the opener, the team went on to win against Pakistan, making it the biggest upset. They likely require just one more win, either against India or Ireland, to secure a spot in the Top 8.

CANADA (2 points | –0.274 NRR)

The side fought back after losing to the USA in the tournament opener. However, they went on to secure a 12-run win over Ireland to remain in the mix. They next take on Pakistan in what is most likely a must-win encounter.

PAKISTAN (0 points | –0.150 NRR)

Surely something no one expected, but the Men in Green have lost two games. The Asian powerhouse first lost to the co-host USA, something no one thought would happen, and then faced defeat against arch-rivals India in a very low-scoring game that was within their reach. The side has to beat Canada and even Ireland by a significant margin to improve their negative NRR. They will also need to hope that either India or the USA slips up.

IRELAND (0 points | –1.712 NRR)

First lost to India, and their side then went on to face heartbreak when Canada defeated them too. Ireland is on the brink of elimination and will now need victories against both USA and Pakistan. However, they will also be relying on favourable outcomes from other matches.
