Paris 2024 Paralympics: SILVER for Yogesh Kathuniya in men's discus throw F56 event

Day 5 of the Paris 2024 Paralympics saw India begin with a medal. Yogesh Kathuniya wins silver in the Men's Discus Throw F56 event. The 29-year-old threw the discus 42.22 meters on his first attempt, securing a silver medal and repeating his achievement from the Tokyo Paralympics three years ago. With this, he has won India's 8th medal.

Brazil's Batista dos Santos Claudiney threw a majestic 46.86 in his fifth attempt to claim the gold spot and also create a new Games record. Greece's Konstantinos Tzounis, on the other hand, 41.32 in his fifth attempt jumped to the 3rd spot and got his hands on the bronze medal.

The F-56 classification is a field event category for athletes with disabilities, including those with amputations and spinal cord injuries. 

India's Yogesh Kathuniya in his six attempts, had the first throw of 42.22, his season's best and the throw that got him the silver medal. However, post that, he could not make an upward mark and had throws of 41.50, 41.55, 40.33, 40.89 and 39.68. 

Earlier in the day, second-seed Sivarajan Solaimalai and Nithya Sre finished fourth after losing straight sets to Indonesia’s Subhan and Rina in the mixed doubles SH6 bronze medal match. 

With several Indian players competing in medal events today, the team hopes to end on a high note.
