The Indian women's cricket team has become one of the best Test teams in recent years, as seen by their home victory against Australia and England. Now facing South Africa at home, the Women in Blue had a strong start to their current series at Chennai's MA Chidambaram Stadium. With 292 runs from 52 overs, openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana set a new record for the biggest opening partnership in women's test cricket history.

In addition to this, Shafali Verma also made history by being the second Indian woman to score a double ton in a Test match. In the third session of the first day of the One Test, the 20-year-old, before being run out at the striker's end, amassed 205 runs off 197 balls, including 23 fours and 8 sixes.

The renowned Mithali Raj was the first who score a double century against England at Taunton back in 2002. After Mithali's 214 against England, Shafali's innings are the second-highest by an Indian woman and the seventh-highest individual score in Women's Test cricket history.

Earlier in her career, she followed in Mithali's footsteps by being the youngest Indian player to reach 500 Test runs and the second youngest player to score a Test century.

As of writing this article the Indian women who opted to bat first have posted 451 runs on Day 1 itself and lost 4 wickets. Skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh are at the crease and will look to end the day on a high.
